I got bored, so I made this little app. It's UI isn't that great, and there's a total of like 50 lines of code. However, it works and that's all that counts.

So, here's a quick description, a preview image, and a download link.

Description: Type in someone's gamertag into a textbox, hit "Get Avatar!" and wait. It should take like 1 second, depending on your internet. You can press "CTRL+S" to save the image in .PNG format to your desktop.

Take Linux/Ubuntu for a Test Drive!
Poster: XiL Destruction

Total Installation Time: Less Than Two Hours

If you want to uninstall Ubuntu, if it was installed as outlined here, all you have to is follow steps 1-3 again. The installer only lets you have one instance of Ubuntu 'inside' Windows like this, and will ask if you want to keep the existing installation, or delete it and start anew.

=============================================

Ok, installing linux is exponentially easier to install than it was three years ago, and it at least five times easier than windows. Observe:

Step 1
Download the .iso file here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Step 2
Either burn the iso file to a CD with Magic ISO http://www.magiciso.com/ or load the .iso as a virtual CD with Daemon Tools http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/downloa ... ewCategory

Step 3
Put the CD in your drive while Windows is running (or mount it with Daemon Tools). A screen will automatically pop up. Answer some simple questions; and the install takes less than five minutes (I timed it).

You want to 'Install Inside Windows'. This option makes a large file in windows' file system (I set mine to 15 GB) that Ubuntu recognizes as a hard drive. If you put the CD back in after installation is complete, you can uninstall with no side-effects.
Image

Choose the amount of space you want Ubuntu to have, and set your username and password (more users can be added once it is installed).
Image

Done after less than five minutes! Restart your PC to see a choice between Windows and Ubuntu. If you select nothing, Windows automatically boots up after 5 seconds.
Image

Step 4
Ok, after you select Ubuntu the first time, the installation is finalized (again, less than 5 minutes) and the computer will restart again. Select Ubuntu to view your brand new desktop! Click the icon in the upper right corner that looks like an orange blot with an arrow to update your system.
Image

Step 5
While we're waiting for the updates to finish, click Applications > Add/Remove in the upper left corner. Than select "all available applications" up top. This lists all programs available through the Ubuntu repositories. Just check a program to install it or uncheck a program to remove it. You'll want the packages "Advanced Desktop Effects Settings", "Compiz Fusion Icon", "Desktop Effects", and "Ubuntu Restricted Extras" to start. This will install Compiz, Java, and Flash Player. Both the updater and the program installer use synaptic, however, so wait for the updates to finish before clicking "apply".
Image

Step 6
While you're waiting for all these packages to install, head over to http://gnome-look.org/ and get a cool wallpaper. You can also adjust the system theme in System > Preferences > Appearance
Image

Step 7
While you're in Appearances (after synaptic has finished), go to the last tab and select extra desktop effects. It should tell you that you don't have the required drivers for 3d acceleration, then ask if you want to install them. Sit back and relax as Ubuntu automatically locates the correct video driver and installs it.
Image

Step 8
Reboot to finalize system changes. To enable Compiz, run Applications > System Tools > Compiz Fusion Icon. To make Compiz automatically run on startup, go to System > Preferences > Sessions and click new. Name it Compiz and put "fusion-icon" (no quotes) into the 'command' field.

To change Compiz's settings, right click the blue box in the upper right corner and select the settings manager. Enable Desktop Cube, Rotate Cube, Cube Caps, and Wobbly Windows to start with (Answer yes if it asks to disable another plugin). Water effects are cool, as are drawing with fire. Check the ones you want, uncheck them later if you like.
Image

Enjoy! 8)
Image

Ways installation has improved in two and a half years
-No tricky dual-booting; the Wubi installer takes care of everything.
-The metacity drivers (default video drivers) have improved drastically. You used to have to spend at least an hour adjusting your xorg.conf file if you had a screen resolution above 1024x768.
-Click, reboot; Compiz done. Seriously, that took me three weeks of configuration on my old ATI card (back when Beryl was still the way to go)
-Automatic video driver installation?

All credit goes to "WaeV" at "Halomods." Click [Here] for the original tutorial.
I just posted this because I thought it was really cool. I installed Ubuntu inside Windows, and that's what I'm posting on now. It's really neat and smooth, yet elegant. Also, it uses almost no RAM or processing power at all to run... it can run on a Calculator Watch and an iPod. So, if you have a computer in your house that's pretty old and runs really slow, try erasing everything off of the HDD and using Ubuntu as the main (and only) OS on the computer. It should run quite well... I know my '01 laptop does! :D

Well, I ran across some pretty amusing pictures during the last few days, and I figured I would post them here. All of the have to do with Halo, and I find them hilarious.

1v1 Update: Once again, I'm here to remind everyone that I'm not in control of these competitions. Admin has all of the prizes, and controls when we have them. Also, he IM'd me today and said, "Hey, when was Fable II released?" -- Apparently, he lives under a rock. If nothing else, we will have the 1v1 Tournament next weekend, and the 1/2/3 place people will receive their prizes whenever Admin decides to show up...

Old Staff Member Back!
Poster: Admin

So many of you may or may not know Senor_Grunt. He was a Moderator for awhile than he had conflicts with school and such. When he was here he ran SOTW (Signature of the Week) and SSOTW (Screen Shot of the week). I believe that a big part of the site were theese contests. There arent any big prizes but you DO get an emblem and a little picture in your signature. We are VERY excited to have him back. It gives the forums WEEKLY contests. So, we are all VERY proud to welcome back Senor_Grunt and SOTW, SSOTW. 8-)

October 1v1 Tournament, Hosted by Team XiL!
Poster: XiL Destruction

After the low amount of people in our recent "Forge Contest", we decided that we needed to have another contest that would actually attract members. Being out of school this entire week, we decided that we would have a 1v1 Tournament. This tournament is Double Elimination, giving you 2 chances to come and take that #1 spot! I will, however, be entering into this tournament. We will be using 1 Map and 1 Gametype. See below:
Gametype: Radar On, Score To Win = 15

Map: No Camo, No Mauler, 1 Sniper

My FileShare: Click Here!

To sign up, follow the instructions below:

Once created, login to your new clan. After logging in, click "Tournaments" at the top left, and join the "Halo 3 - 1v1 Tournament".

Here's a list of the prizes:
  • 1st Place - 1,600 Microsoft Points
  • 2nd Place - 1 Month
  • 3rd Place - 48hr

The last 2 things I need to announce are the date and how this is going to be played out:

1.) The way that we organize our 1v1's, and arrange the matches is with a "1v1 Tournament Randomizer." This program allows you to input the players, hit a button named "Randomize" and watch as it works wonders. This is the most fair way to do it, and this is how it will be done.

2.) Date and Time: Saturday, October 11, 2008. Time is undecided, probably around 4:30 PM and will last until around 7:00 PM EASTERN Time.

Thanks, and practice hard!

Achievement Unlocked: 7 on 7!
Poster: XiL Destruction

1.) Go to Xbox 360 Dashboard.
2.) Go to the "Settings" Blade.
3.) Click, "Change TimeZone"
4.) Change it to the VERY last one. It's like GMT+14 and it starts with a "k." This will make it 6AM TOMORROW over there.
5.) Sign onto Halo 3, and you're in the future.

Here's the achievement list

-and-
Here's the actual achievement

Final Note on the Forge Contest:
First, and foremost, I'd like everyone to know that I have no control over all of these contests. I know that I'm an admin, and I own the site, but "Admin" (The actual person who pays for these things) has not been online in over 2 weeks, and he rarely signs onto AIM or Xbox Live. He also has all of the Microsoft Points, and every other prize that has been won. Therefore, I in no way can award anyone winner because I cannot hand out prizes I do not have.

Thanks, Destruction.

Try The New Xbox Experience Now!
Poster: Anetheon

TeamXbox wrote:
You don't have to wait until November to play with The New Xbox Experience. Microsoft has released a working sim of the new Xbox 360 user interface. Since there is no Xbox 360 controller for you to use it on your browser, just click on the up/down and left/right arrows to surf the NXE. When available, hit the play button for a behind the scenes video that explains you how Microsoft developed this new interface.

Here is a quick summary of each window:

Welcome

By default, your Xbox 360 will load on this menu. Here you find "Online Entertainment," "Friends," "Express Yourself," where you configure your avatar; and the "Nextflix" window.

Inside Xbox

This is Microsoft's channel that connects you to the Xbox community.

Game Marketplace

Microsoft has split the Xbox Live marketplace in Game and Video stores. As the name implies, this section will only offer content for your Xbox 360 games.

Friends

The first window is "Live Party," which allows you to create a virtual party with up to eight users from your Friends List. "Game Night" will let you take your party somewhere else, whether that is to an online match or simply set up a group voice chat. "Capture a Moment" will let you share photos in real-time with your friends and family. "Leading Social Network" lets you connect with friends via text, IM and voice or video chat.

Video Marketplace

This is the other marketplace, where you'll find the "Netflix" channel, "TV and Movies," "Xbox Live" videos; and "Music Videos"

My Xbox

Here you'll find your "Entertainment Libraries," where you access your games, videos, music and pictures; "Windows Media Center," which allows you to record your favorite TV shows and stream videos from your PC; and last but not least, you find "System Settings" where you configure your Xbox 360.

Team XiL Weekly Update 9/25/2008

Image

Well, its another Thursday which means another update. What is going to be discussed in this weeks update you may be asking yourself. Well, we have got a few announcements and then just some general halo announcements.

-Forge Contest S08
-Maybe a new customized component
-Halo 3 is a year old.
-New trailer from Bungie

Forge Contest S08

The Forge Contest ends on October 1st! You still have a couple of days to make a map and submit it. We need at least 6 or so people for there to be a prize and as of now, we have one. You can go to Announcements and click on “Forge Contest S08” to find out more details about the contest.

New Modification!

There might be coming a new modification to the forum to make it more interesting and some new changes will be happening between the dates of October 1st and December 1st. Please note it is a top secret and there might be some hints about the changes around the forum or lets say even a video….If you think you are going to be able to ask the staff, you won’t be able to. That’s, how top secret it is.

Halo 3 Is a Year Old!

I don’t know if you guys remember on this date a year ago Halo 3 came out. Think back about how excited some of us to be opening the game up and finally see what Bungie had in store for us gamers. Or maybe you are one of the people that waited in line all night, skipped school the next day, and played Halo all day. Now however, we are a year ahead and the game is not new, but not old. With the new achievements and the new map pack Halo can become as refreshing as it was the first day you got it. Oh, by the way, there is a little video on Bungie about something and read on to find out more about it.

Teaser Trailer…

Bungie had released a Teaser Trailer today and it figures that they release it the date Halo 3 came out other than the day they had set before. To view the post and video simply go to http://www.bungie.net and click on the latest update.

----------------------------------------------

Well, that nearly sums up this weeks update. We hope to see our site grow and get the word of XiL out there on the web. Oh, and don’t forgot, SIGN UP FOR THE "FORGE CONTEST S08"!

VailidKiller's Insane Rocket!
Poster: XiL Destruction

The other day, Me and VailidKiller went into Team Slayer hoping to level him up. We won a few games, and unfortunately he did not level up. However, he did manage to get an amazing rocket on a driving warthog to start the game off!

Here's his clip, hosted on FileFront: (Also, watch out for his clip in H3F's Upcoming "Community Montage!")
